We’re all familiar with AA, AAA, and D batteries, but when we get into the world of coin cell batteries, things become a bit more convoluted. You might be asking yourself, what do these numbers even mean?
On a coin cell battery, you’ll find a code that consists of two letters, followed by three or four numbers. The first letter indicates what type of battery it is, while the second letter, the R, simply indicates that it’s a cylindrical battery. The options are:
- BR - Carbon-monofluoride/Lithium
- CR - Manganese dioxide/Lithium
- GR - Copper-oxide/Lithium
- LR - Manganese dioxide/Zinc
- MR or NR - Mercuric-oxide/Zinc
- PR - Oxygen/Zinc (zinc-air battery)
- SR - Silver-oxide/Zinc
The numbers indicate the size of the battery. The first two numbers (or just the first, in a three-digit code) indicate the diameter of the button battery, while the last two indicate the height of the battery in tenths of a millimeter.
Therefore, a CR2016 battery is a manganese-dioxide/Lithium battery, with a diameter of 20 mm and a height of 1.6 mm.
